Biodiversity Loss: Health and Economic Hazards in Nigeria’s Niger Delta

by Blessed Adjekpagbon
Abstract

Biodiversity loss is a common occurrence in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria since crude oil was discovered there from 1967 till date. The folks living in that part of the country have been traumatized for ages due to oil spills through illegal exploration of oil by some groups of bunkerers/petroleum pipelines vandals on one hand, and legally authorised multinational oil companies’ defiance to operations safety rules on the other.

Farm lands, fiona, aquatic/terrestrial life and the atmosphere have been extremely polluted either by excessive oil spill or gas flaring, coupled with the rising effects of climate change on the environment over the years, without any viable solution in sight. It is time to take actions.
