Lama Lama | By Amadou S Jallow (Gambia)

Abstract

Lama Lama is a vivid narrative that captures the essence of childhood in a rural village during the rainy season. The story is centered around a young boy who, hungry and weary after a long morning, seeks out a mango tree guarded by fierce ants. With great care and cleverness, he retrieves the coveted fruit while avoiding the painful bites of the ants, which are fiercely protective of their territory.

As he returns home to share the spoils with his family, he also reflects on the values of generosity and selflessness, learned from his grandmother and mother. His simple act of sharing brings joy to both him and others, despite the scarcity around them. The story portrays resilience, ingenuity, and the deep-rooted cultural practices of sharing and community.
